Why is this still going on!

How come people are still going on about this! If you don't like the quality of the re-issue disc one play your original even though its not as loud and dangerous........... Mine I'm not that bothered I just crank it up and love it!

fuckit if it's dodgy in places why would you want it to sound perfect!

my god you all listen to Brain Donor!

I listen to Brain Donor, but none of their CDs have a persistent annoying crackle throughout.

The reason people are still discussing this is because Island Universal and Cope himself touted this majestic (and for me expensive - $30.00) reissue and it's a flawed piece of crap. To me that justifies several days' worth of bitching.

copefan,

Some of us have flawed CDs. They sound so bad that we cannot enjoy them.

If your deluxe CDs sound fine to you, could you please post the numbers on the back of each CD here?

That will help us determine whether there are "good" and "bad" batches which can be identified by the numbers.

Thanks

It will probably be aliasing noise resulting from whatever process or effect has been performed on it, it's not visible on a waveform, even zooming in. you need some better tools, Samplitude has them (you can do some crazy visual FFT comparisons with that), also using Sonic foundrys noise removal filters to produce a subtractive wave based on threshold dbs will also show you noise. Proper noise (as in not crackles and pops) however does spread over most of your dynamic range, so the only way to truly get at it, to remove it or see it, is by running a kind of chase algorithim which is second guessing (based on nifty predictive math) what should be there as opposed to what shouldn't be (aka noise).

Try this http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/teaching/Z24/02-audio.pdf for some more info. that explains how aliasing noise can occure in an A/D conversion, thing is though similar artifacts can be produced by digital processing such as downsampling (form say 96K to 44.1K), or even the corrective techniques of some digital effects such as compression, phasing, or any of the newer whacky effects out there.

Edit : Not only, but also, badly setup anti-aliasing filters/effects/processes can also produce crackles/noise all of there very own. In fact I have in the past written an entire tune out of anti aliasing noise, Oval do that kind of thing a lot.

That 5.1 thing.

A couple of people have said they've noticed some of their players saying that the disc is flagging up as a 5.1 recording. Now, I know next to sod all about 5.1 production, (stereo is complicated enough thanks, I don't want to be worrying about mixing down to three other channels). but I wonder offhand what happens when you take a stereo recording and just push it through a 5.1 mastering process, could the crackles and mad signal boosting be the result ? I dunno, any 5.1 knowledgable engineers ?

I've uploaded WAVs of the first few seconds of "Slow Rider" to:

http://tripalot.com/cope/reviews/#jehovahkill-deluxe

You can hear for yourself the crackle, along with the amplified version of the source material.

copefan, you can actually help us by posting the numbers on the back of your CDs. I am curious what they say.
