First Hatfields LP
Aug 11, 2004, 23:06
Thanks for the Pozzo tip - I'll check 'em out.

The first Hatfields album had, particularly on vinyl, a very low mastering that rendered the many quiet bits almost inaudible (on my lowly system anyway) in places. The CD is much clearer, but heard side-by-side with 'Rotters' it still sounds recessed. I think the mega guitar blast that is 'Gigantic Land Crabs In Earth Takeover Bid' would've been even more awesome with a clearer production. 'Rotters' is much more in yer face, methinks. But what the hell, they're two virtually perfect records whatever the knob-twiddling.

I wish Julian would reassess the Canterbury Scene. To each his own I know, but I can't help feel he's really missing something.

By the way, Caravan's Eclectic label is reissuing the first two Egg albums on CD imminently. Anyone put off by prohibitively expensive Japanese imports need hold back no longer. My order's already in.

Nice Enough To Eat
Aug 11, 2004, 23:11
Thanks again for your kind words, Jim. Yeah, 'Nice Enough' is one helluva sampler. If only they'd seen fit to put a bit of 'White Noise - An Electric Storm' in place of that bloody dire Quintessence track, it would've been perfect!

Island rocked in '69. No doubt about that.

Richard Sinclair is a trained silversmith too, by the way. Is there no end to this great man's talents????

Thanks for the info about the Hatfield LP; I have only heard the CDs and not back-to-back so I didn't notice the difference. Funny, but I prefer the debut; I'll have to give "Rotters' Club" more listens.

I'll be interested to hear what you think of Picchio dal Pozzo.

That's the best news I've heard all year...

I can't wait - I'm glad I didn't fork out for the japanese imports on these two great albums!

Has Julian slagged it off?

Although particulalarly not a fan of the scene myself, I can't help thinking that Julian is rebelling against the 'new Kevin Ayers' label he seemed to be attracting at one point.

Ok I managed to find the troll band page that was offering the cd for $12
http://www.trolltrolltroll.com/index2.html

judging by the track on Golden Apples I think its worth checking out. Reviews that I saw a few months back seemed to be pretty positive too

Trying to think what I have been getting into this week.
I got a walkman recently so a few tapes I did a while back
spiritualised Ladies & Gentlemen/Tangerine Dream Zeit.
Nice to rediscover these both of them are even better than I remembered. Spiritualised seem to have a real r+r pulse under the layers of whatever. I think that Julian Might be right about Zeit and rooms that'll never be the same. i was left wondering what serial or minimalist stuff I'd stuck on the other side of the tape when I flipped it from spiritualised. very out there.

Bruce Loose had a solo record? Gotta look for that, as I'm a huge fan of early Flipper!
