I had a very wise lecturer in my atmospheric physics course at Imperial College, who went to great lengths to point out how little we really understood about it beyond some broad general principles.
He did however spend an entire lecture on how the then current hot topic, depletion of the ozone layer due to jet aircraft, can secure good research funding.
