I remember Grufty Jim making the point that Alaska WILL be drilled. He actually reversed his point of view a few years back. I'm looking for the link right now, but I can't remember whether it's here or on his blog.

The gist, as I recall it, is that if we drill ANWAR now, we will be able to do so in a measured way, with ecological safeguards in place.

If we don't do it now, but wait until the shit hits the fan, then the polar bears and natural wilderness will be very much in the backs of people's minds.

I'm also reading "Collapse: How societies choose to fail or survive" by Jared Diamond, and I can't recommend it too highly.

I think that the dualistic political debate that goes on in both the UK and the US is utterly irrelevent, and that this will become increasingly obvious over the next few years.

What we actually need is a dictatorship, not a democracy!
