Well, we all knew the Obama campaign would eventually reveal the zipper on the back of its suit...

Obama's trying to broaden his base. As McCain is so mistrusted by the xtians, it's the perfect opportunity to extend a cheap olive branch to all those lapsed Dixiecrats to come back to the party of FDR.

In all this exuberance over Obama, everyone needs to remember that he is an Xtian, he identifies with them. Being that America is so chock full of 'em, this doesn't have to mean it's a bad thing that he can communicate with them. If he can draw the country away from the crazy-ass neocon right-wing oligarchy model of political thinking and back towards a more rational course, even a compromised one, would be something. We haven't seen much in the way of progressive government in the USA lately, and that's an understatement.

It's a big motherfucker of a ship to turn around. The captain might have to pander to the crew for a while to make sure the whole damn boat doesn't run aground. Cynical, opportunistic politics? Well, no doubt. It's been the way of Washington for a long time... I doubt it's gonna change overnight (as anyone who gave the Carter administration a chance can tell you).

lets not forget this nugget of wisdom from obama's lips to your ears..'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.'or this...'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mothers race.' or this"I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites."
Is he really even committed to healing race relations, or just pandering to both sides of the issue for political gain?

I guess it's pretty much what you'd expect from a former community organizer, whose position was once partially funded by the Catholic church.

He did specifically say that federal funds could NOT be used to create positions that required a religious litmus test or involved proselytizing.
It does tend to be the church that deals with things like homelessness and soup kitchens etc. Nobody else wants the business.

I'm not as wary of Obama's religious overtones as I am of Bush's, or to be more precise, Bush's 'Base'.

You can boil down religion in America to two basic camps... the kind that thinks of religion in earth-bound, practical, community terms, and the kind that focuses on the book of Revelations, judgement, punishment, and bizzaro promises of transportation to a sort of urban heaven with gobs of materialist opulence.

There might be some overlap there, but I'm very happy to see that America's three-decade-long (at least) flirtation with 'branding' religion under the exclusive authority of the stridently ignorant xtian right wing is ending.

Perhaps we're returning to religion being more associated with civil rights and antiwar progressives and less with apocalyptic fundamentalists. It's about time. Americas been bullied by those lardheads too long.

Let's hope so. Speaking of which...
