Pragmatically, it's near as dammit pointless.

Peak oil is here or almost here depending upon who you believe.

Demand has already outstripped supply for the first time, and only the market is allowed to regulate demand. No other controls are permitted.

So a) the truckers protest are pointless and useless. The international price of oil is dictated by things other than governments, so protesting against the governments can make next to no difference.

b) if the price increases don't decrease demand, the price will increase further. This MUST happen, as there is no way of meeting demand. So for now, the poor are fucked. Later we'll all be fucked.

c) Modern western capitalism is based upon growth. Without energy, things will go into reverse. Negative growth = no profit = no investment = the system doesn't work any more.

d) Even if the US takes Iraq's oil, drills Alaska to buggery, invades Iran, nukes China and takes over the world with an evil death ray, it will only postpone the inevitable by a few years.

If they were using the oil to buy time to put alternatives in place then there would be some justification, but the transition is by far too little, by far too late.
