I can't remember if I ever went to Newport RI.
As for the cold, I'm a New England boy, born and bred. It's not that bad- I can take the cold better than I can take 100 degree weather with full humidity. Which we also get here sometimes in the summer. It's a year-round cavalcade of discomfort!
Really tho, this is nothing... Northern Maine, or out in the northern Prairie states, now THAT'S COLD!

I wish I had the time to inform you of why this cat WILL NOT be in the house of white but sadly it's nap time for me(America has given me the gift of a heart attack at the age of 39) But in a Nutshell....That's where this no experiance BLOW HARD BULLSHITTER belongs! well it was also the diet,smoking etc...But shit man the stress in the States is rough! Everybody running like chickens without heads here in Los Angeles! Im moving to Maui with my girl in about a year to escape the noise! Aloha!

I wouldn't make a statement about the whole USA based on your experiences in LA... Haven't been there myself but I know it's a congested, expensive city. I hate expensive congested cites. Used to live in the Boston area, which is small potatoes as far as metropolis's go, and I still couldn't stand the 24 hour a day noise, the inability to get away from human artifice, the overcrowding, etc. Housing costs are insane everywhere, but absolutely, certifiably psychotic in the major cities.
Have a good life in Maui. Sounds like a great plan.

Bit off topic but ... In defence of LA, its as stressful as you make it, like anywhere else. After twelve years here, I find at its worse its pretty nutty and flaky. As for getting away from it all, I know many places in the San Gabriel mountains, less than 45 minutes from my door, which are as untrodden and isolated to get very worried if one had a mishap.
There are times when I wouldn't mind a bit of Maui myself.
