The education system of Christain Europe was indeed funded and founded by the church itself. Hence all the monks sitting and transcribing old texts and teaching their contents to a select, privelaged few.

Unfortunately, this same practice also STOPPED further developement in the fields of science and maths. For instance, the microscope and telescope were invented as toys by spectacle makers and Gallileo made his own after hearing about the idea, handgrinding all the lenses etc ... amazing dude or what!?

The oldest colleges in the world are still church associated ... Marburg in Germany has the oldest protestant Uni (and the oldest non-catholic one). Monks would sit in their oratories (matron!) and write beautiful books, but none of it was original and these books were seen only by the few.

Education of the masses owes so much to Caxton.
