Your question is pertinent but considerations such as these lie outside the present inquiry and in the realm of personal opinion. My own feeling is that these people had some kind of star religion, and solar or lunar 'calendrics' came later, but I emphasise this is not part of what we are doing, and belongs in the fertile country of conjecture. As to the physics of the whole thing I will patronise you by directing your attention, first of all, to the video on the net of the equinoctical sunrise at Loughcrew (Cairn T ) in Ireland. Upload that and I will explain what is happening. You will feel suitably patronised at this stage but persevere and you will find it instructive. You did ask.
