Caroline, thank you so much. The times I did this as a kid and have forgotten all about it!

Ofcourse the ancients would have known this and it is probably the roots of it being called the Sun Stone in Gaelic. You hit it and it releases the Sun! Beautifully simple.

I have this picture now of some mad shaman running up and down the face of Newgrange with a little mallet (they found just such a thing inside Knowth) playing the quartz facia like a glockenspiel and making it light up in little patches like Zen from Blakes 7 !!!
