Literally a quiet week as I have had a problem with my pc audio On the upside I've had a chance to give a proper listen to two really interesting records courtesy of Mooncat that fit nicely with all the old ECM stuff I have been trawling through and my renewed interest in the early Bathory lps

Turisas - The Varangian Way
Shining - Blackjazz

and promo copies of a couple of really good / promising records that were sent to me on spec by a start-up label based in Western Australia

Intern - Wake Up & Smell The Coffin
The Joybringers - Thrum, Twang and Threnody

and

Pat Metheny - Orchestrion
Johann Johannsson - Englaborn
Samuel Katarro - The Halfduck Mystery
Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me

Boult's last (1978) recording of The Planets - which I have on LP only - is currently available on a mid-price EMI 'Great Recordings Of The Century' CD, i.e.

The Dorati Minneapolis 'Rite' - an old Mercury recording - seems to be currently unavailable, but I should be able to provide you with a copy if you're happy to email me your address.

As regards your comments re Van Morrison, serious food for thought there. I agree that 'Veedon Fleece' is very much in the same ethereal ball park as 'Astral Weeks', but had never considered 'Common One' to be likewise. But the more I think about it, you may have a very valid point. Whatever, you've encouraged me to play 'Common One' again, and that can never be a bad thing...

They seem to naturally flow in that order for me, with the same interaleted themes. Although they are all reflective, Astral Weeks has a largely fresh morning/spring feel, Veedon Fleece has an overall autumnal celtic afternoon vibe, and Common One is perfect for a reflective fireside.
They all have a multi-seasonal feel, but almost as from a different vantage point re. youth, young adulthood and middle age perspective as well. Common One I think is deepest Van. Summertime In England is going to be played very loud today!

Pixies - Bossanova
Hoorah! Hadn't heard this for ages, really enjoyed it.

Broadcast - Tender Buttons
From the library after sopmeone here mentioned Broadcast. Hadn't heard them before, but liked this a lot. Reminded me of Stereolab, but with a bit more graunch in the synth sound.

Eleh - Location Momentum
My absolute favourite evening listen at the moment. Really haunting and hypnotic.

Oneohtrix Point Never - Rifts
Still getting regular plays. Another late night fave.

Coil - Live One
Really getting back into this again.

White Hills - S/T
The Heads - Tilburg

Elvis Costello - Punch the Clock
Bob Marley - Kaya

Sunn O)))/Boris - Altar
Fab as ever.

I love that album. In keeping with the Crop Circle discussion next door...

'The Happening'. Wonderful, goes very well back to back with 'Velouria'.

The BBC session of that track is my favourite Pixies tune of all time, a real shout-along killer, innit?

As is a good deal of their output - one of the best live bands I've seen ever ever ever!
