Eels - Electro Shock Blues

Erland & The Carnival - s/t. (a bit overated this)

Dave and Toni Arthur - Hearken to the Witches Rune. BBC didn't listen to this before giving her the Playschool job.

German Oak - s/t.

Gore - Gore, Hart Gore, Lifelong Deadline. Still hit the spot.

JPT Scare Band - Sleeping Sickness. I no like. Not riffy enough.

Ladytron - Witching Hour. Poptastic.

Sundial - Return Journey, Live Drug.

Thin White Rope - Exploring the Axis, In The Spanish Cave. The archetype of underated bands. How the hell did this lot not take off. Ace.

This week's spins:

Discharge 'Why'
Deep Purple 'Machine Head'
Ian Gillan 'Gillan's Inn'
Al Stewart 'Zero She Flies'
Traffic 'Heaven Is In Your Mind' (superb new Sundazed 180g vinyl of U.S. version of first album) and 'Welcome To The Canteen'
Van Morrison 'Veedon Fleece'
Various 'Strange Pleasures - Further Sounds Of The Decca Underground'
The Wedding Present 'Bizarro'
Julian Cope 'Saint Julian'
The Chieftains 'I', 'II' and 'V'
Boult's last recording of 'The Planets' (utterly terrifying) and Dorati's Minneapolis SO 'Rite Of Spring' (ditto)

Have a good week, all

King Loser - You Cannot Kill What Does Not Live. Glorious lo-fi fuzzed out surf rock from New Zealand. Like a cross between Cycle-delic sounds and Sonic Youth.

Fireworks - Set the World on Fire. More Dionysian noise from the garage.

Auktyon - Girls Sing. Jazzy Russian art rock. But not jazzy as in goes nowhere, more in the breadth of instrumentation.

Shuggie Otis - Inspiration Information. Still one of my favourite albums. If Brian Eno were a soul musician, I'd imagine his music would sound something like this.

Kousokoya - 1st. Slightly lower key, less metal version of High Rise. Still noisy as all get-out. Recommended for any fans of that band.

Marmoset - Record in Red. Very catchy, 2-minute post-punky vignettes.

Black Devil - Disco Club. Out of time French space-disco.

Les Rallizes Denudes - Cradle Saloon '78. After '77 Live and Mizutani, it's the next record to scout down.

Magical Power Mako - Hapmoniym. I guess most psychedelic artists must have hours of tapes with indulgent little experiments on them. Unlike them, Mako's 5-CD collection of outtakes and unreleased experiments is arguably his best work. Knowing how to play a kazillion instruments also gives these "songs" a huge amount of variety.

Robin Williamson - Songs of Love & Parting. I think I prefer this to most proper ISB albums (most of which I also love).

That Petrol Emotion - Manic Pop Thrill. It's the totally addictive guitar sound on this that keeps on bringing me back.

Gilberto Gil - S/T 1969. Definitely his best album and a must for fuzz guitar fanatics.

Also:

Dalek - Absence/Dalek & Faust - Derbe Respect, Alder

Julie Driscoll - 1969

Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - Strangers of the Universe

Archaia - S/T

Bondage Fruit - Bondage Fruit 1

Adolescents - S/T

Shiina Ringo - Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana

Charles Mingus - The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady

Circle - Pori/Taantamus/Meronia

Karuna Khyal - S/T

The Homosexuals - Astral Glamour

Lubos Fiser - Valerie & Her Week of Wonders

MGMT - Congratulations

Veedon Fleece - sublime album. I think that it's the natural companion to Astral Weeks. Include Common One and you've got a wonderful trio that fit together perfectly. My favourite Van albums, and that's saying something.

Those version of The Planets and Rite Of Spring you mention. I love those pieces and would be very inteterested in sourcing them Any info would be great.

think she was my first crush ever. Still haven't heard this music though. Thought I'd seen it described as pretty straight trad, is it really dark then?

an '87 live set turned up on Dime this week. Haven't played it yet. There was also a Head of David which was pretty decent.

love the band, one of the greatest guitar duet ensembles ever I think Television meets country meets Sabbath? Loved finding out what the lyrics actually were after transcribing them wrong. Some of it's too obscure to get straight off but there's a site out there with lyrics on. (or not since the site I linked to on a message a while back now seems dead, shame)
Kyser went onto the Mummydogs then retired for several years, did he go into science? Think he came back with a new project over the last couple of years.
Some of the others became Acme Rocket Quartet, who were largely instrumental.
Just listening to the Walkabouts and hit a point that really reminds me of TWR as I'm typing this. Slow tautened groove sounds like a muscle being flexed the wrong way or something.
