's cool -
like what you like!

But out of curiosity
which lame album did you have to sit through?
(or if it was a show, what year?)

89'ish 1st album, read they were doing ''Dreams'', all the usual blather about the new future of rock, and i got a warmed over rehashed AC/DC lite with zero charm, plodding guitars and a pig awful Dylan cover, i found it all a good advert for packing in mainstream rock altogether. Over the years i have subjected to Amorica & 3 Snakes & a Charm and found them wanting to say the least. I won't dwell on the live album with Jimmy Page, the best i can say is it is an improvement over Coverdale Page.
They didn't do dreams either, bad night all round.

Hmm, all i seem to have heard is the bad stuff: album after after album of dull, chugging barroom rock. And the Dead weren't much better than the Doors (oh, give me the Seeds anyday :-)

Only kidding folks. The Doors weren't *that* bad. But the Grateful Dead? A schmaltzy two guitar 12 bar boogie band with a psychedelic past? America's Status Quo my friends.

With the admitted exception of the Live album (and even that wasn't too bad in places) I don't see how the 13ths can be beaten.

(Although Silver Apples run them a close second)

And Plasticland a close third.

EXACTLY!

America's status quo...

Not saying I'm in favor, just that there is a parallel

Dunno about the Dylan cover - Redding yeah...

I don't dig the 1st album so much anymore, tho I liked it when it came out
(I was in high school)

Southern Harmony And Musical Companion
is the one that has worked the best for me,
side 2 in particular

tho it doesn't sound like you should waste yer time

won't bother about it anymore, carry on,
thanks for the data

The Who Sell Out!

Townshend, however, has no excuse!

I think Pink Floyd is the only major UK band not to have sold a song to the commercials (I swear I've heard "Iron Man" somewhere . . . )

That was my point about "what does a Canadian band sound like anyway"?

It's a continent covered with state-lets which vary as much within "countries" as between them (Minnesota has more in common with Ontario than Texas, etc.)

Oh God, before reading any of the replies, I have to address this most egregious affront to the many great American bands that have existed. As for the Dead, personally, I'd rather inject myself in the neck with a 10cc syringe filled with kerosene and haldol but I know some love this band in a sick, obsessive way. I admit they sometimes had their moments but most of the shit laid to tape probably shouldn't've been, imo only.

Great American Bands lest we Forget (Compiled by a Yank)

In No Order (the greatest might be in there somewhere)

1. Mission of Burma (short lived, brilliant)
2. The Wipers/Greg Sage (I think the best punk band, American or otherwise, of all time. Listen to Doomtown and Over The Edge...gives me the spine chills, then from out of the rage comes humour and pop smarts like on Human Being and Is This Real. Nirvana learned all from them...without the Wipers there'd've been no Seattle Sound).
3.Thirteenth Floor Elevators (Psychedelic music from the south? Hell, psychedelic music in general? I'll take Roky and co.).
4.Big Star
5. Love (definitely Forever Changes might be the best American album ever...maybe).
6. The Doors (as far as impact and the whole package/mystique, it's hard to beat the Doors for best ever. I personally love them.
7. Jimi Hendrix and the Experience
8. Nirvana
9. Urge Overkill (why did they make the list? Listen to their first 2 albums, please. Obviously, Cope likes em).
10. Jane's Addiction (I don't care what anyone says, I love Jane's Addiction, a real band and amazing live).
11. Ween (just brilliant)
12. Mothers of Invention
13. The Byrds
14. Slint (changed indie rock forever, inspired a million bands that sucked).
15.Dinosaur Jr. (the early stuff is pretty great. Not heard the new one).
16. Beach Boys
17.Neutral Milk Hotel (short lived but great band)
18. Stooges/MC5
19. Cheap Trick (best power pop band ever?)
20. The Rolling Stones
