Is it not unlike someone posing the question "who's Britain's greatest band?"; someone pipes up with "Them" and then gets told, "No, they're not from England"?

(Maybe it isn't the same, but it seems similar.)

The Happy Flowers! One of my most memorable gigs, for a few reasons, was Happy Flowers and Bastro at Thannington Community Hall near Canterbury - double booked with a tea dance (honest). For a couple of years afterwards I kept the can of Red Strip that Mr Anus (who had Wanker written across his gut at the time) had given me. Ah, memories.

Anyway, Yeah - Velvet Underground - you're right.

I'd add The Ramones there. Perhaps the most influental American band ever? Both in good and in bad.

When it comes to guitar noodling, I'll take Quicksilver Messenger Service's "Happy Trails" over any Grateful Dead recording ever made.
