The first two James Gang LPs are the business, Rides Again especially. You can see why he went solo as they are your basic rock power trio but Walsh came straight out of the traps all singing all dancing. Zephyr always struck me as trying to find the way whereas Walsh just heads straight for the highway, ably assisted by Bill Szymczyk who obviously was in the same headspace as the band. The third lp suffers from trying to let the rest of the band write a tune and the live LP should be longer but you can't have everything.
