New/ish:
Gwenno – Y Dydd Olaf. For Broadcast and Jane Weaver fans, a pretty essential listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXMT5fL3cKg
Landshapes – Heyoon
Jim O’Rourke – Simple Songs. Great opening track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qA9rAaeEOs, but the rest of it feels too comfy to impinge on my brain.
Slug – Ripe. Mate of Field Music, backed by Field Music, and as a consequence, could easily be Field Music, albeit a slightly charmless version. Has its moments though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOGebBfOEKU
Baron – Torpor
Young Fathers – White Men Are Black Men Too. Three guys defiantly doing their own thing. Love this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REEPJp_GvAQ
Old/ish:
Midday Veil – The Current. Hooray, new album out in August. The best modern-psych-band-heavily-influenced-by-Hawkwind by miles, primarily because they dig the proto-electronica/synth stuff as well as the interstellar chug. This is sublime, I could listen to that bassline forever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYWHcEjLzHA
Pharaoh Overlord – Horn. Thought I’d take the plunge into their back catalogue. Found this a bit exhausting to be honest, though does feature a cracking version of SM3’s ‘Revolution’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtsaRGFwt44
New Trolls – Searching For A Land. Ah, Italian prog… of which this isn’t actually all that representative. A mixed bag, veering between earnest acoustic balladry and faux live heavy jams, but features a couple of really tremendous tracks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dl7og7YZX4 / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tte3cL2c8tI
Wallenstein – Cosmic Century. Picked this up in Berlin a few years ago for reasons that remain obscure, other than having a great title. Was surprised that the version available on Spotify appears to be the same crackly vinyl transfer as the CD I bought. As for the music itself, it’s definitely got something, just not sure what. It’s like a strange melange of Floyd, Supertramp and ELO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ypJJboHK88
Radio 2 Prog Rock part 3 – Ooh, John Wetton this week. The whole thing has quite a nice casually slung together feel about it, which allows for pretty much all of ‘Starless’ to be aired for instance (most interesting fact learnt was that the supremely creepy bassline in the middle section was written by Bill Bruford rather than Wetton). UK and Asia still sound horrible, mind. Next week: Ian Anderson!
Film:
Industrial Soundtrack For The Urban Decay – Interesting if teasingly short film about the origins and originators of industrial music. A bit rough around the edges, but yet again makes me realise how little I really know about a scene I think I vaguely do. Genesis P Orridge is really not looking well. Boyd Rice looks like a prize tit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvNAidWN7Ps
