I'm not at all surprised many people didn't like it. Especially with that opening, which really is quite vile. Now, once you get into the book you can see why it started like that, for there is a clear and literary reason, but it's a brave choice. I know a few who also read the sampler and just went 'naah, not for me.'
As for the rest of it, well, even Stewart Lee admitted he hadn't a clue what happened there, and pretty much ignored those parts. It's not the future of rock n roll, nor even of literature, but it's an entertaining enough romp once/if you get into it.
