I read it right through after getting it for Christmas and really enjoyed it. It's certainly flawed, but I didn't find it a difficult read, I thought it pretty much bowled along and kept me engaged. A lot of that was because even though it's narrated by a character, it's very much written in Cope's voice- the same voice he uses in his autobiographies, his Drudions and his reviews. And since the character is basially a stone circle loving ex-80s pop star and psychedelic burnout, Rock Section really isn't too far from being a projection of the author.

It's classic Cope, in that it's self indulgent, sprawling, daft, some bits are clumsy and don't work, others have moments of superlative insight and beauty. The section about Hillsborough gives the novel its emotional core, and the writing about that day I found extremely powerful and moving.
