Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band

Got to confess until the other day I'd never heard this. 'Greenfield Morning I Pushed An Empty Baby Carriage All Over the City' left me totally gobsmacked: Ringo playing how I'd never heard him play before, Voorman bass, Lennon guitar. Years ahead of its time. On youtube.

Try her "Fly" album. Absolutely sublime. Especially "Don't Worry Kyoko,"

Yeah, I've heard Dont Worry Kyoko before, agreed. I haven't heard Fly for years. Must revisit... but I reckon Plastic Ono Band passed me by - knew of it, didn't hear any. Oops.

Yoko's Plastic Ono LP was probably overshadowed by John's at the time. nice idea to release them together but probably lost her one a lot of attention. For what it's worth I've always thought "Why" is the standout track. So much energy going on in it.

Definitely way ahead of its time, if only in that early PiL and Banshees albums contain some suspiciously similar musical tropes.

Is any of that Yoko Ono material going to get a remaster in the Apple series or has that reissue campaign for Apple material been and gone? Have been wondering about this for the last few years, since the bulk of that stuff came out & the Beatles catalogue was finally remastered followed by solo material by ex-members and whatever was originally put out through the label. Never heard about any Yoko stuff appearing though.

Malcolm Mooney era Can sounds pretty similar too from what I remember, not listened to the Plastic Ono Yoko disc in quite a while. Did have Fly on my old walkman so tracks turned up at random intervals. & that still sounds somewhat Can-ish

Ryko Disc remastered and reissued the complete (I think) '70's / 80's catalog several years ago. (I bought them all up a few years back on Amazon). Lot's of great stuff on those records and very ahead of their time. She's very underrated I think. If you can take Can / Faust / Beefheart / TG / Chrome / Pere Ubu / early PiL then there's really nothing to fear from Yoko's stuff and you might appreciate it. Amazing to think there are Beatles involved in some of those records. Kinda surprised Julian didn't do an AOTM feature on her stuff!

Alex Chilton ripped of 'Mrs Lennon' for 'Holocaust' don't you know. He was a genius and wouldn't copy rubbish.

"Underrated".... I was half thinking of putting Plastic Ono Band in the 'Unmentioned on Unsung' topic - I decided that surely the Yoko axis of it had been, sometime, but, I don't recall it.

Dunno about that. I've spoken with Dog on here at least a handful of times about Yoko. He's not a fan of anything she did post-Fly, which I guess is fair enough, but I thought she did a pretty good job subverting pop tropes with Elephant's Memory and the like.

Anyway, Yoko does a Q&A every Friday where she answers 15 FB and 15 Twitter questions. Sometimes there aren't too many more than 15 questions asked, so if you ever fancy interacting with her about anything it's worth a bash. Let me look up the question I asked (it was something sycophantic about Why).

Here we are:

"Wahoo! Yoko Ono just answered one of my [admittedly total brown-nosing] questions.

Q: How did you encourage John to produce such striking, cosmically forward-thinking guitar playing on your wonderful song Why? So many genres are forever indebted to you for your work on that Plastic Ono album and Fly.

A: "I didn’t encourage John to do that. His incredible sense of music made him realize that he had to play that way for that kind of sound."

It's still in my Top 10 songs of all time...

I'm kind of more a Fly dude now. I do think Yoko's Plastic Ono Band record is easily superior to John's, at least for my tastes, but the fact that it's played by Lifelong Rockers does start to reveal itself after several listens. Just a certain drum flourish here that Jaki Love-Time would never be caught doing, or an out of place blues riff played by Clapton that breaks the spell. Why is still an adrenal shot to the scrotum and I'll love it right up until my dying days. That and Greenfield are the definite stand-outs. Fly is that sound's more organic conclusion, though.
