Bushman’s Revenge – Thou Shalt Boogie! Really liking this slice of Nordic jazz/prog/space/rock. Check this for an opening track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bK-S4Bnee0k

Smoke Fairies – Blood Speaks / s/t. BS was just about my favourite album of 2012, and still sounds fantastic, a thrillingly bleak mash-up of delta blues, English folk and medieval plainsong. The new self-titled album is different… the jury’s out as to whether it matches BS, but the single is brilliant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZaHXiNWKGM

XTC – Drums and Wires. So, it occurred to me reading a recent thread that I didn’t really know any XTC albums either, so thought I’d try the parent album of perfect single “Making Plans for Nigel”. Hmmm. I can see this was certainly influential, though mainly on bands I dislike. All a bit clever clever, but devoid of passion and any real agenda. But then, the final track (“Complicated Game”) is great… so maybe I need to listen again. (Oops, sorry Squid!)

Taman Shud – various tracks on Soundcloud. Still absolutely loving this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7Zr8S2VsuY

School of Language – More Fears EP. Looking forward to the album proper.

Skull Defekts – Dances in Dreams of the Known Unknown

English Heretic – Anti-Heroes. Love this. Would definitely have been in my top five for last year if I’d heard it at the time. Fans of Crumbling Ghost and folky/uncanny/trippy stuff will be sure to like this: http://englishheretic.bandcamp.com/track/the-dangerous-gift

Motorpsycho – Still Life with Eggplant / Behind the Sun. On first listen, new album (BTS) sounds more cohesive than the last (SLWE), though there’s nothing as immediately catchy as “Hell pts 1-3”

Chelsea Wolfe – Pain is Beauty

Terje Rypdal – Odyssey. Bit of a test to listen to this all in one sitting, but it’s all worth it for this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPnkBAsj6rg

Vatican Shadow – Kneel Before Religious Icons

Mellow Candle – Swaddling Songs. As inspired by listening to Smoke Fairies.

Wishbone Ash – Pilgrimage

Listen With Father:

Air – The Virgin Suicides. The perfect amalgam of Floyd and Auteurs on this track? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mQ4reLS8Lo&feature=kp

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here. Is there any other album this chilling and this successful?

VA – World Psychedelic Classics, Vol. 3: Love's a Real Thing. ‘Psychedelic’ might be pushing it, but there’s some great heavy Afro-funk on this – cue mass outbreak of arm flailing at the dinner table.

David Bowie – “Heroes”. Is it just me, or is this album a tad over-rated? Yes, the two singles are great, but was the instrumental stuff really that radical in 1978? For me, Low is a better album.

Talk Talk – Laughing Stock. When push comes to shove, my favourite album ever. There’s no better illustration of music as some kind of magical alchemy than this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piG59eSi6DY
