Staring At The Sea – Blow Monkeys
It’s a long way from their glossy 80’s pop (of which I’m not ashamed to say I was a fan of!). This is what is probably described nowadays as more ‘organic’. There are some decent songs here, but a little more shimmering wouldn’t go amiss.
Sniper - Marc Hurtado & Alan Vega
Saturn Drive Duplex is a real classic Vega track!
Corner of the World – Solus 3
Sounding promising on early listens...
Chess Northern Soul – V/A
One of my most played albums this year.
The Roots Of Nirvana – V/A
The Beat Happening track is really good – the spontaneous sounding production brings to mind Julian. Also highlights include Shonen Knife, Young Marble Giants and a live Flipper track.
Pale Noir: The Road To Duat – V/A
I got a download of this when I ordered the WIK▲N / Urethrateeth cd. Not too keen on a lot of it TBH, but the WIK▲N track here (Renegade Priest) is really good!
Plus...
Rite - Julian Cope & Donald Ross Skinner
Evergreen - Echo & The Bunnymen
To All Things What They Need - A Guy Called Gerald
Raw Power – Iggy & the Stooges
Tremelo ep – My Bloody Valentine
Saturday Aquatic Pixie Acid – Pets With Pets
Ecstasy – Lou Reed
Mantaray – Siouxsie
Mojo Presents...Good Times, Bad Times – V/A
Also listened to the Causa Sui stuff that has been raved over here. Now there’s a fine line to my ears between guitar wig-outs and guitar wankery and this definitely over-steps the mark as far as I’m concerned. Some decent moments for sure, but overall waaay too wanky, sorry!
