That's it exactly -- high end Gibsons just feel so good to play that it makes you sound better immediately.
I think it has to do with the neck/fretboard -- I could care a less what any guitar "looks like".
Fenders are brutal instruments with a raunchy tone -- which is good if that's what you're going for (the Hendrix screaming metal voodoo.)
In comparison a Gibson is like a "surgical tool." No wonder it was the primary axe for folks like Zappa, Garcia, Iommi, Santana, Buck Dharma . . .
