Buggroff, that's me you're talking to. SG = a thing of beauty and noise. A masterpiece of guitar design. Especially in cherry red.

Sorry Squid! I had the vapours.

I don't know if this is the reason for Sea Cat's disdain, but all those 90s Brit pop bands, Oasais and their ilk, all seemed to play SGs which rather tarnished their image for a while.

Currently, the gorgeous Mia Clarke of Electrelane plays one, and she's an excellent, innovative player as well- always taking the leftfield approach but very physical, tugging and scratching, as far from the lad rock dullards as you can get. Something of Angus Young in her stance as well, though I've yet to see her duck walk across the stage- or dress in school uniform (maybe in my dreams...)

It definitely depends how you play them. Squid, Mia and many other use them like Sonic Astral Wands, as they should be used, mote it be, whereas other, unworthy profaners, see them as an appendage to fag dangly JD on Amp
miscreance.

Mote It Be ?! A Wiccan dirge if ever there was one......

IIRC, during the early 70s (not sure of the exact period) it was very hard indeed to get hold of an SG Studio because Pete Townshend had smashed them all to bits.

What does IIRC seem mean ? It reminds of semi-abusive Latin Lessons.

Mr Squid/Black Tempest of this parish has a beautiful SG which he was kind enough to let me have a go on and, by all the Moons of Munopoor, you really do feel like your license to rock has just been given a gold stamp when you drape it on your shoulders.

That's it exactly -- high end Gibsons just feel so good to play that it makes you sound better immediately.

I think it has to do with the neck/fretboard -- I could care a less what any guitar "looks like".

Fenders are brutal instruments with a raunchy tone -- which is good if that's what you're going for (the Hendrix screaming metal voodoo.)

In comparison a Gibson is like a "surgical tool." No wonder it was the primary axe for folks like Zappa, Garcia, Iommi, Santana, Buck Dharma . . .

My first much-loved guitar was a single pick up cherry Hofner SG bass with an action that would be the envy of a modest suspension bridge. Horrible to tune. Horrible to play and I still have the calluses to prove it but it looked great. Wish I still had it. That goes for every bass I have ever owned I think. As in so many things trading up isn't always what you think it is going to be. I think the worst deal I ever did was a Precision and a Hofner violin bass for a new Aria SB700 in 1980 ish. An Aria! What was I thinking?

I've wanted one for years and finally found the right one (and for the right price) ... doesn't sound or feel like anything else ... briefly owned a Les Paul once and hated it ... still getting to know this one so will have to give a fuller report at some point, but there's certain kinds of rhythm and lead sounds that I've never found anywhere else (and it even sounds good with the tone knobs down!)

Goddamn!
That review has me itching to pull out my copy of Population 2 (which Ima gonna do as soon as I hit the "add reply" button.)
I wanted to add that I've a goal to buy an SG and have been close a few times - damned close.
Two problems though, they are costly and, as a lefty nobody ever has a lefty model on hand.
I flirted with the idea of getting the Epiphone knockoff which is roughly half the price but they just don't do it for me. Now I'm no guitar player... having last owned a Westbury electric (with dual DiMarzio pickups!) back around 1984 but I do have a strong desire to learn... but ONLY on a Gibson SG (a left-handed model) that's either red or black... and ALL mine.

There's a Tony Iommi signature model (an object of desire in the catpod) and I'm sure, seeing as he is a most notable southpaw player, they must do a left-hand version.
