Fan Club - Jellyfish
Kicks every kind of Brit Pop to the curb. Tunes for days and they rocked in the best possible way. Should have been one of the biggest bands of their era but the lack of a real front man and a slightly dodgy image somewhere bewteen Catweazle, Kula Shaker and Scooby Doo did for them. That and the Seattle thing. The difference between Jellyfish and the likes of Wondermints and other third wave Power Pop is the songs. Most of those bands are all about recreating an era through the attention to detail in the arrangements but most lack serious songwriting ability. This lot had the proverbial full package.

A Grounding In Numbers - VdGG
Similar story really. A lot of modern prog is all about soundscapes and complexity of arrangments and playing style but very little of note happening in the writing department. Hammill love him or hate him was born to write and the band are brilliant. Worth buying just for the drumming.

One World - John Martyn
Live In Regents Park - John Martyn (One World bonus tracks)
This is the record that should have made him a real star without having to change his style and roll his jacket sleevs past his elbows. Coming out in November 77 it was a year too late perhaps. Even six months might have made a difference given that Yes went to number one in the summer. By November the cool mainstream was all about Dury, Stranglers, Pistols, Blondie etc etc. Few people among mainstream music buyers were going to be just discovering some bearded bloke who played sitting down with a band full of old farts. As with Jellyfish, genius was no defence against the vagaries of fashion.

Tron Legacy - Daft Punk
If you wish TDream had slotted in another album bewteen Ricochet and Stratosfear then this is a fair approximation of that. Loved the film - an fx driven action movie where hardly anything happens - and the soundtrack is well up there.

Mono Magical Mystery Tour - The Beatles
Not a proper album in some ways but my favourite mop top record by a long way. I am not all that interested in the mono / stereo debate especially as I rarely listen to anything from a fixed position between two speakers but this is a stunning album in mono. Just powers out of the speakers.

Say You Will - Fleetwood Mac
Paul Lester thinks this puts Buckingham up there with Eno and Brian Wilson. Not entirely sure about that but a very good record. Tusk 2.

all these got a play ...

Heavy Metal Kids - Heavy Metal Kids
Love Junk - The Pursuit Of Happiness

Parsifal - Gustav Neidlinger, Hans Hotter, Hans Knappertsbusch, Irene Dalis, Jess Thomas & Orchester der Bayreuther Festspiele

The Avant Garde - Coltrane & Cherry
Unhalfbricking - Fairports
