Absolutely Ian and that's exactly my original point. I'm not excusing the rubbish , just emphahsing his pre-naff status and talent. Credit where it's due and all that.

I was never a fan, I'm afraid. However, I remember that time where he was using all his TV appearances to shame his wife over her affair with the guy decorating their house. It was a nice lesson in revenge, I thought. He'd be sat on the panel of 'Juke Box Jury' or at his keyboard on 'TOTP' with a messy pot of paint with a couple of brushes in it.

I was never into Genesis either before or after Peter Gabriel left. I thought 'Mama' was okay, though.

"Rolling on the floor laughing my ass off" TSC. x
I honestly didn't expect you to start a Mr Collins thread on Unsung, so i burst out laughing. (i apologise).

I'm not a fan of his at all i'm afraid but i will admit to loving And Then There Were Three. My hubby will hugely disagree with me but PC just doesn't do anything for me musically at all.

I'm glad you laughed! To be honest, I was being a tad mischeivous. I couldn't resist the temptation to do a Phil thread, with genuine justification, I hope.

Being a prog fan, I like old pre-pop Genesis, although I hardly play them these days. They were my first exposure to prog which led to Yes, Crimson, VDGG, Gentle Giant, Caravan etc, all of whom I do still play. I just wanted to point out the guy's abilities and involvement in some great music of that era. I cannot abide his solo stuff or pop Genesis.

Yup. I would argue that those artists had little choice because the rock media (at least in the UK) abandoned expansive music when Punk came along. So all those older guys who had been playing long (too bloody long in some cases) or else trying to do the Little Feat thing suddenly either gave up (Man), relocated to Europe (Roger Chapman), went futher left field (Hammill) or went stark raving singles crazy.

Some of it was greed but some of it was that there was suddenly no platform for them in England to make that kind of music. Dire Straits and the Police et al had replaced the big 70s acts and Queen really went in a singles-led direction after News of the World or maybe Jazz. Genesis of course went the exact same way. And Yes. John Martyn had a crack at it and failed. Joe Cocker was luckier.

Unless you were true to Metal or already minted you were pretty much fucked when it came to making interesting rock music unless you were prepared to pretend to be allied to Punk in some way. This was before the days when people could make albums at home for buttons. Recording time was really expensive. This only occured to me when I read how much the two Joy Division albums cost to make.

He wanted to produce a Blue Nile album but they said no. But I quite like Genesis, it's his solo stuff I don't like very much. (except Face Value which I do like)

Hmmm.

I agree with all of your comments in his defence, and would even, ahem, add his first solo single (and absolutely nothing else in his own name, mind) to his long list of achievements - a fine, original record with one of the greatest drum entries in rock. He did some good records with Brand X as well, and I quite liked that album he did with Frida Lyngstad though, like most of his output, its appallingly time-locked in the 80's.

BUT...

Prosecution? Every other song he's released in his own name, especially the sub-de Burgh ballads, his appallingly immodest and arrogant nature, and his completely OTT social conscience/"charidee" side which has always rubbed me up the wrong way, especially when he chunters on about "another day for you and me in paradise". You and ME, Phil? Like I've got a Swiss mansion and a house in Monserrat like you?

This month he releases his 8th studio album 'going back', which covers a large bunch of motown classics. He has been quoted as saying that he wants to songs to sound exactly like the originals, which begs the question 'why bother?'

That's not unfair but for me that drum entry is what people will remember in 50 years time. The rest will be forgotten.
