Ya, I concur. Beware of supercheap dupe services... it's very likely CDR's they're giving you.
The difference between a proper CD and a CDR is that the CDs are made with a process that gives the foil inside the plastic of the CD deeper pits for the laser to read.
CDR's are made by burning a little pip in the foil of the writable disc. It's very shallow in comparison and will soften over time and exposure to light.

My store bought CDs play great in my car... my CDR's used to work OK, but crap out by the second track or so now. I'm sure it's partially my car's deck to blame, too.

Thing is, you're never going to get a company to do a cheapish short run of glass-mastered CDs. So CD-R duplication is pretty much the only way to go.

As long as it gets our music out there and heard, that's fine by me.

Being a bunch of unknowns, the price tag will be a deciding factor on whether somebody buys our discs. If they really, really like anything on the record they'll hopefully stick it on their iPods, anyway.

We also intend to use these EPs for promotional purposes - and I doubt whether a promoter will want to keep and cherish a Neotopia record for longer than it takes for us to help them sell some of their beer*. So a disguised CDR in nice packaging will probably suffice.

Playing live is our priority.

*Jeez, have I turned into a cynical grumpy old man, or what.

For a short run (of CDrs), you might as well do them yourself. Find someone with a lightscribe(?) drive. You WILL know someone that has one, they just might not know.

Essentially, there is little difference in quality between CD-R's and replicated CDs. CD-R's are a cost-effective option for short-runs of 1-499. They're also the best option if you have a really tight deadline since duplication is a quicker process, but you will pay alot more than you would for replicated discs if you're ordering over 500 units!

CDs are manufactured so that your data is embedded into the disc but they do take longer to produce due to glass mastering etc. If you were going to get more than 500 CDs pressed I'd definitely go with replicated CDs.

Nice to know! Thanks for all the info Rebecca. I just wish I could stretch to affording the Wewow CDs, they do look great, and I'm impressed with the eco-friendly aspects of them.

Thanks for the feedback :)

We have a few new CD packages which are low-cost and we've had some really good feedback from unsigned bands...please do contact me when you do your next run as I'm sure we'd be able to put together a great package to suit your budget!

Thanks for adding this, Rebecca. Our recording plans have, once again been hit with logistic problems, so... Well, who knows? Maybe we'll be able to get those five people together for long enough to get something a bit more substantial and considered down. Until then, we'll stick to live, I suppose.

I've bookmarked you for future reference, though.

I’d strongly advise removing the ‘at’ symbol from the address on that post, as spammers have specialist software that scours forums looking for new addresses to target!
