In my (non techy) experience CD-R's are a bit less hardy then regular CD's and prone to being a bit more temperamental too - not playing occasionally on certain bits of kit.
I know a mate of mine sometimes has trouble playing CD-R's on his car stereo.

I don't know how true it is, but I did read somewhere awhile ago that certain car manufacturers installed CD players in their cars that were designed to not play CD-R's and copied stuff very well, if at all, in some deal with the recording industry to help against piracy and so on.

Hmm, don't know about that. Many car players allow for - and indeed identify discs formatted for data and containing MP3 files. I have noticed scratches appearing on the playing side of CDs in our current Calamity Wagon.

In fact a proper CD by Jackknife Lee has been rendered unplayable, now. I'm hoping that when I get round to it I can get my pooter to read (and rescue) the tracks for at least running on iTunes.

I'm sure someone told me there was actually some blurb in their Carbook that said something along the lines of "Your inclusive CD player is made to fuck with copied discs".

Dunno which car it was. Unless it looks like something Batman might drive I don't know much about cars.

CD-R the information is literally painted on ... and it can come off, most notably when exposed to SUNLIGHT!!!!

This is not the case with a properly blasted mass-produced CD

when you check out the prices on those companies, Kiddo, make sure you know if you're getting CDs or CD-Rs and if it's CD-Rs don't spend, unless it's only because you don't wanna spend an afternoon burning them yourself! CDs without the R are a much preferable product - not that it's ever been in my price range to release one, cos I don't do runs of more than about 50 or 60 copies most times.

I used this lot http://www.brandedmedia.net/
They were excellent and did a 100% recycled digipack at much cheaper prices than anyone else I could find.
This is what it ended up looking like

Try these guys - http://www.wyastone.co.uk/dod/index.html

Nimbus Records - reknowned classical label in its own right and until 10 years ago was operated CD pressing plants in the UK and the USA,being one of the leading pressers both sides of the pond.
Now it operates a high end/high quality CD duplication on demand service which are indistinguisable from replicated discs.
Hope its of help.
