At the melancholy end of the spectrum:

"St Swithin's Day" - Billy Bragg - "the polaroids that hold us together/must surely fade away/like the love that we spoke of forever/on St Swithin's Day"

Perhaps rather over played in recent years, but "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Atmosphere" by Joy Division (and most of the songs on Closer).

Large amounts of The Smiths catalogue, examples "Well I Wonder", "How Soon Is Now?", "I Won't Share You" and "I Know It's Over":

"If you're so funny
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
And if you're so clever
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very entertaining
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very good-looking
Why do you sleep alone tonight ?
I know ...
'Cause tonight is just like any other night
That's why you're on your own tonight
With your triumphs and your charms
While they're in each other's arms..."

Scott Walker - "Big Louise"

The Velvet Underground's "The Gift", at least from Waldo's perspective:

"... he pictured Marsha, her sworn vows overcome by liquor and the smooth soothing of some neanderthal, finally submitting to the final caresses of sexual oblivion. It was more than the human mind could bear.

Visions of Marsha's faithlessness haunted him. Daytime fantasies of sexual abandon permeated his thoughts."

A few more:

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Maps"
John Cale (Leonard Cohen) - "Hallelujah"
PJ Harvey - "Send His Love To Me"
Depeche Mode - "One Caress"
Kate Bush - "Wuthering Heights", "Under The Ivy"
Simon & Garfunkel - "Kathy's Song"
The Divine Comedy - "Our Mutual Friend"
The Wedding Present - "My Favourite Dress"
Bjork - "The Dull Flash of Desire"
Pet Shop Boys - "In Private"
