Only one exception on that is a proper Rockabilly slap bass solo.
Played on a doghouse bass (double bass).

even them best kept to a minimum.

No!

The only exception (outside the rockabilly thing) is the Julian Cope's yet to be released How German Is My Helmet? The whole of this is a bass solo and subverts the form to such an extent that the form becomes irrelevant.

The rockabilly thing always struck me as an extended run the existing rhythm of the song, minus the drums & guitars. A bass solo is a thing of evil.
