Only listened fitfully to CD2 so far but have found much to enjoy. Gonna have a proper listen now in as close to ideal circumstances as i can get together, yay ! Tried loading CD2 onto my computer but it didn't recognise it and just spat it out. Dunno if it's intentional but it seems it's such a Black Sheep that iTunes* just ain't havin' it ! * Er, where it's been filed under gospel ;-) Oh. really like the cover art /design too.

Enjoying it muchly and more so with each play. Motherfuckers is every bit as good as I wanted it to be - and it's a 3 minute pop song! Others have highlighted These Things I Know & Psychedelic Odin and I agree, but I'm currently being swept along by Dhimmi Is Blue. This as beautiful a thing as Julian has written in a very long time. I Can Remember This Life is also gorgeous. This (and road trips with common era) has had me delving back into my Cope collection. That man can write.

My son started humming aling to Dhimmi is Blue, and is convinced he's heard it in a movie...he's 13 and sees most new releases. I told him its a brand new song, and not likely on a soundtrack... Either way, he likes it melody...me too. I don't care if this is the greatest Cope cd ever, of the 00's, or of the week...It doesn't matter, 'coz what it does have is a bunch of great moments spread throughout... the chorus alone to Psychedelic Odin was worth the price. I stepped outside myself for a minute last night, and told myself... "You hearing new music by your favorite artist, and this chorus is amazing...its catchy & has great lyrics"...upon returning, I played the song on repeat all night. lovin' it more and more with repeated listening. Cope has always said his stuff needs to grow on you, and it may not hit you for 6 months...(paraphrased)

I think it's because something that is instantly likable, doesn't have any staying power. I like how your perception of an album can change over time, like a long term relationship and its endless subtleties.

things i love about this reckid... it's ramshackle epic quality, like someone playing the soundtrack to 2001 a space odyssey on a ukelele whilst inebriated. it's 'englishness'... the syndrum (oh yesss). julian's pervasive loveableness regardless of how strong his opinions may become. things i don't like so much... i find it a bit idealogically prescriptive in places. (to be expected i know but i just can't diggit). so there...that's my two-penuth.

After reading all these posts. I can't wait to hear it. I confess to owning none of Julian's music at all. I have ordered Black Sheep this week. I will let you know what I think of it sometime next week hopefully.
