I hated "Born In The USA" even at the time - as an ambivalent protest song which celebrates all that's good and great about America whilst implicitly condemning the Reagan / Bush regime I think Neil Young's "Rockin' In The Free World" is a much better example. I do like Springsteen's more stripped-down acoustic stuff like "The River", "Nebraska" and "Tom Joad", though.
The Replacement and Springsteen? Never thought of them in the same breath myself - they seemed to me to have more in common with Big Star or the Faces (albeit with better tunes than the latter), but listening to some of the slower songs on "All Shook Down", you could be right I suppose.
