Yeah, I never liked the song 'Born in the USA,' much as a song, though it never deserved the criticism it got from those who misunderstood it as a patriotic, flag-waving anthem. Everyone would probably agree it's his weakest album too, though it has its moments. As for The Replacements, I think you're right in the influences you mention- and 'Exile' era Stones, of course- but Springsteen is in there too, if just as someone who was a contemporary, albeit right in the mainstream, doing his own take on classic garage band rock n' roll in the 80s when everyone else was using synthesisers (in the pop charts) or going in a more folk rock direction (REM, the Paisley Underground groups). All those alt country / roots rock bands who came later seem to respect Springsteen, too, so I think he has a credibility that moves him a bit closer to that scene and away from the dreaded likes of John Cougar Mellencamp, Bryan Adams, Billy Joel etc.
