Oh c'mon, the guitarist wore a top hat! Ok, maybe not redeeming, but it's certainly a feature.

Appetite came out in 1987, first cover was withdrawn within 6 months. Band toured for a year with glam metal Motley Crue. Album started to get traction in 1988. This was the time of Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Prince. Main British exports were Def Leppard, goth, and Stock, Aitken, and Waterman productions. Green River, Mudhoney, and Soundgarden were pretty unknown unless you got 'OPtion' or 'Why Music Sucks' fanzine. Alternative was Volcano Suns, Killdozer, Homestead Records, SST( which was getting weaker and weaker) Appetite is definitely derivative. But it was great FM radio rock, Stones channeled through Aerosmith. American blues based hard rock. La glam metal scene blossomed for a bit, then hair metal bands, then grunge. And in the end, Metallica was the only one still standing, having been there since 1983.

Pixies released Come on Pilgrim in 1987. Mr Cope released St Julian. Actually, after a little bit of hunting around (I only have a couple of minutes), I have to admit that on the whole 1987 looks a pretty rubbish year for music!

I actually used to get them muddled up with Aerosmith when they were first around, which says it all really. And Axl Rose!... Don't get me started on that fuckwit!

If sales figures were really an indicator of quality, then in 1987 Witney Houston, Bon Jovi and Bruce Hornsby & The Range all released better albums than Guns N' Roses.

Well, it has to be said that the Bruce Hornsby album is an inspirational record that has been unfairly overlooked, and is bound to be appreciated for its true visionary genius in decades to come. If he'd committed suicide he'd be regarded with the same reverence that people have for Milli Vanilli by now.
