That's what is so brilliant about the album, the way the sound matches the themes of each track

A major landmark to punch 'musical snobbery' in the face!

Great record but it also serves as an open door for every semi-talented musical ignoramus on the block to make their own 'statement'.

Half the music that came out of the UK in the mid 80s laboured under the misconception that borrowing the Velvets' sonic palette could act as a cloak for their half-baked witterings.

The album (like the first Ramones record) is so very influential partly because it allowed a lot of bad acts with nothing original to say to thrive under the cover of darkness and a floppy fringe.

As Cope points out in his BBC KRock thing (talking about Amon Duul I rather than the Velevts) it's fairly easy to make records that sound like that. Doing it first though and in the face of indifference and even hostility is where the true poison lies.
