I've not heard anyone complaining about bin theft either. It all seems to work rather well. Initially I considered forking out the 160 quid for a gravity lock, but someone would have to fill my bin with concrete three times to make it worth paying for!

Bizarrely, if someone either empties or fills or takes your bin its theft. So if they look interested in it at all call the police. (Except on bin day of course.)

"Initially I considered forking out the 160 quid for a gravity lock," This has been an extraordinary thread on how people tackle their rubbish, the idea of paying £160 for a gravity lock to keep one's rubbish safe is an idea I shall cherish for some time. In the end its about the social contract we have with each other, 60 million of us living as we do cheek by jowl in a small country, we have to accept some sort of enforcement of rules about waste disposal - forget individual rights in this instance its about working together as a society. Plus its not so terrible, think of those children and adults in some South American countries sorting out those vile festering piles of rubbish and trying to make a living out of what they find - I expect they would like a few individual rights...

Last year my town began requiring you purchase bags from them directly if you want your trash picked up. They still pick up recyclables under normal local tax revenues. I have to admit this surcharging caused me to grumble at first, but then I realized I'm much more careful about how and what I throw away.

No label, no collection and a hefty fine if your stuff's found on the streets. In parts of Germany they will only collect their own bin bags, which cost about a fiver each. They also have enforced rubbish separation and supply bins for compostables, paper, glass, plastics and other rubbish.
