It is not the expression of an opinion though. It is the wilful mis-representation of fact (commonly known as lying) for the purposes of holocaust denying propaganda. He even admitted it wasn't true during his trial. If he'd said he believed the Jews should have been exterminated, THAT would have been an opinion and one which would have made his motives clear. However, what he did was present lies as academic study and fact. That is despicable and does deserve punishment, because there are others out there doing the same. They need to get the message that this is so unacceptable that it puts them in contravention of the law.
