I'm not picking a fight here, but how do you view Nelson Mandela?

I hadn't heard the giving up music thing, but anything Matt Johnson says about his plans has to be taken with a sackful of salt. All those planned covers albums, albums out next year, etc.

The website's just had a redoing, so he must still feel active on some level.

He's always been slow to put albums together, which has always made me nervous upon release - after so long will they be any good?

And he's never disappointed me. Naked Self is right up there with the best of them, a proper kicking band instead of some of the more polished studio elements that blighted earlier albums, superb cutitng edge lyrics, as usual managing to say enormous things in short pieces of plain language (an astonishing gift), and fuck me that band live were amazing.

I was at that Glastonbury set and it did kick, although plating the second stage in the middle of the afternoon isn't the best thing for objective judgement.

Indeed, anyone at Glastonbury sin't the place to judge them. I remember seeing Spritualized in 93 and being entranced by the swirling one-chord textures.

When I heard a live tape it was nothing like that, it had huge builds and drops and dymamics. Several days in the spliffing fields will fuck with your head something rotten.

I was actually there. Going to Militant meetings, knocking on doors and pushing leaflets through letterboxes in Liverpool in the mid 80's.

Hatton might be a motormouth (these days he hosts a talk show on local radio) but he was prepared to stand up and defy the government of the day.

That Labour chose to expell its activists and radicals during this period may tell you a lot aboout how they got to be the centre-right party they now are.

The "jury" will always be out on GG until until someone can find him guilty by fair means or (more likely) by foul means.

Yeah, your right there. What I meant was that I have difficulty deciding if he is a decent person or a self-gloryfying twat as some people suggest. I pray to god, or I would if I beleived in god, that he has done nothing improper. That's all the Bush and Blair bastards would need to through up a smoke screen on there machinations.

A bit of both, I suspect. It's all relative with politicians innit.
Am hoping to ask Chris Hitchins what he thinks next week. Should be a laugh.

Bumped for Manao so we don't have to repeat an old argument.
