Re: What is dowsing?

"Q:What is dowsing?, A:It's magnetic,
then
Q: what is magnetism?, A: something you can blame phenomena on."

Very true, but that doesn't make dowsing a phenomenon does it. That kind of reverse logic is very floored ...

I have a phenomenon here. It's magnetic. Dowsing is magnetic, so this must be dowsing.

Erm .... nope ..... doesn't work. Sorry.

Moderated or not, this forum is a damn sight more polite than the peer-review system.

It's an unmoderated open forum so feel free to abuse me if you so desire.

Sometimes it's necessary, don't be shy.

I'm not entirely sure, but I suspect the point I was trying to make, albeit cackhandedly, is that magnetism is a phenomenon in itself, and as such not really a reason for things to happen. When we invoke E.M. fields, we don't really know what they are (I don't anyway).

Yet we know that we can infer their existence from their effects.

There was somene in Fortean times trying to come up with a succinct method of quantifying "realness" and things that are inferred by their effects on other things were only deemed real if they were within an accepted paradigm.

What the fuck am I going on about?

I dunno, I know what I mean, I'm just not coherent enough to express it. Spent too long in scienceland I think.

No need. I'm still in a state of unabashed wonder at the fact that there appear to be other entities out there who can think beyond football, soap operas and suchlike.

This is realy quite good:

http://www-istp.gsfc.nasa.gov/Education/Imagnet.html

It was first proposed around 1600 that the Earth was a giant magnet ... cool. You learn something everyday ... well those that want to do anyway.
