am I the only fan of the Black Sheep VC?!

It's a distinct possibility!

What the fuck? A BSVC fan? Even I'm not a fan and I was there!

We're still working on the always difficult second album. At first listen it wasn't disappointing enough so we having to rethink it.

C'mon man, what's not to love? Who hasn't felt this way deep in the caverns of the earth? The sheer freaked out subterranean joy, the lingering smell of disarticulated bones, the sound of blood coursing through your ears (perfectly captured by the analog hiss, like the nearby rushing of the Styx).

Seriously, you guys are heroes - I'm not joking! I've got the great Wideford Hill playing right now and it's like a-cappella Cluster. I wanna head back down into the Great Mother's bosom and shout and grunt and scream the corn into the furrows.

Beautiful. We always said that if only one person related to it (and the deep joy we felt creating it) then job done!

We may have to reform.

Along for the ride regardless: Indeed! Well put. That sums it up alright.

I also still have the WSYM tour programme and it's in not too bad condition.

No. I never saw The Icicle Works live, but did see P.I.L around that time at Poole Arts Centre.

In one respect, the musos that try to evolve don't always get it right - nor could ever do so (Bowie '77? Yes!'87? No! Miles '70's? Yes! '80's? Er....) because they permanently shake things up. Better that than boring, dwindling repetition.

Absolutely.

Think of all of those great, innovative musicians that were great through most of the 70's (David Bowie, Peter Hammill and Neil Young come immediately to my mind) and went on to suck big logs in the next decade. Most of them are still around and intermittently making good records, but no-one expects career defining stuff from them anymore. Why should the Drude - one of very few true innovators in the 80s - be any different? As others have said in this thread, we're lucky to have him still around and doing his much-varied thang which, even in its now homemade and under-produced state, rarely disappoints and more often entertains big time.

For my own part, being of a certain age (ahem), it's the two proper Teardrops albums and the first two solo albums that represent my first choice Cope, with all of the albums from 'Peggy Suicide' to 'Interpreter' getting the most regular spins. I have bought and mostly liked the subsequent solo stuff but to be honest nothing since (including his myriad side projects) has thrilled me to the extent of his early 80's and 90's output, except perhaps for the excellent 'Trip Advizer' comp which is a fine a precis of his 21st century solo work as I can imagine. I'm also really digging 'Self Civil War' which sounds to me like a lovely amalgam of Julian's most considered work and the 'Droolian'/'Skellington' spur of the moment stuff. Hey, the Drude's still delivering the goods. Feel the love.

I got into Julian around the time of the much maligned my nation underground, make of that what you will.
I have bought nearly every release since then. I loved and played to death everything up to Interpreter. I bought the albums after that and liked some more than others. Not everything is to my taste but I have always found it interesting and worth a listen. In that respect he is very much like The Fall. In fact, like The Fall, I find he is quite ahead of his time and when I go back to any of his later albums I find them an easier and better listed than when they first came out.
I would say that Trip Advizer is an easy way to get to grips with much of his latter solo output. It's just a great album.
The Rite series is brilliant and I don't listen to it nearly enough.
Self Civil War has his genius right (rite?) through it. Some of it shouldn't work but it does. It opens strongly and Cosmic Flash for instance is just brilliant.
I don't mind if he doesn't always reach the peaks that he has in the past. At least he's trying. Sometimes, like in all relationships, it's not him it's me!

If you want to get your Copey Mojo risin' again then, if at all possible, go and see him perform live. Seeing him perform his songs is where it all tends to fall into place.
