"'The Beatles were irrelevant' or 'anything pre- 1976 is worthless'."

I agree about people trying to be 'look at how irreverant I am' with the first sort of statement, but the second? I still feel that if it ain't done by guys with long hair and guitars it sin't worth anything around here (obviously there's exceptions).

Erk! Sorry, I meant...

In my opinion I think it is good to see you again, but I can quite understand how other people might feel different. I hope all is well, but that is only my point of view - other people probably hope everything is utterly shot to pieces. Then again, I could be wrong. Or not.

I get what you're saying Mr Squid. I think it's very much down to the individual reading and responding IMO (glarp!). I think it also depends upon from whom a particular post is from. After all these years of interaction and chats with familiar people one gets used to individual quirks and mannerisms from some - you expect more of a 'All ..... is SHIT!!!" type of from some folk and less so from others.

I would say that if someone chooses to enter the field of debate with what might be deemed by some to be provocative language - again like," Your music is CACK!" kinda thing - then it is only right that they have no cause to complain when any response is in kind. Of course, with something that is as often as personal as music (and by extension a reflection of a persons likes and dislikes and traits) then you gotta accept that, from time to time, passions will run high.

However, as far as I'm concerned, if you are new to a forum - any forum - then I think it impolite and actually pretty pointless to wade in with a "Fuck you! You're wrong!" approach from the off. Not only in terms of basic manners, but it has the possibily of rendering anything else you say, regardless of merit, inert simply because people can't be arsed with the hassle.

I certainly think it was worthwhile for you to air your views dude, and why not?

You know what - there's a misconception that it's somehow a bit wet and wishy washy to be try to be reasonable. It's not. Sometimes it's fuckin' hard work.

What Stray said.

If I write "the new Wild Swans 7" is the single of the year", it's because I think it is.

Surely we don't have to write IMO (or IMHO cos we're all humble here, aren't we?!!) after every single sentence?

What next, Squid - a dress code?

; )

Yeah, but KISS's 'Sonic Boom' album is clearly, obviously and recently proven by actual science to be the greatest sound ever recorded in the history of everything ever and as such the new dress code is black spandex catsuits and platform boots. I think most people will be happy with that.

Maybe we should follow the example of Robert Anton Wilson and try discussing music without using any of these words? That would neatly solve the whole problem ;-)

Ok. So we could have...

"It rocks!"

or

"It sucks!"

Tricky. I think the idea is that anything deriving from the verb "To Be" is out. I am not sure he had thought about the implication using verbs as adjectives!
