Dunno what your beef is. He's not here to please us, I'm sure it's always been about his own 'trip'. Having said that, surely the point of any artist is to follow their muse, for good or bad. If your making music just for the market, then you end up with the same shit that's been hoggin' the charts for the last 20 years.

Cope has pretty much done his own thing/ followed his own path since the early 90's, and thank god for that. For all his hits and misses, and they're have been plenty of both, I'd still rather he followed his heart/gut than turned out what was expected of him. Down that path lies the likes of Muse or Coldplay or wahtever.

I wasn't a big fan of 131 the novel, but I loved a lot of the music he created for the project, and loved the idea that it became almost an integral part of the book. I'd defend him to the hilt, for the right to do, as an artist, exactly what he fuckin' likes. That's why I love the guy, he'll take chances, not always in directions I appreciate, but at the end of the day, it's his choice. We don't have to buy into everything he creates. I can't think of another recording artist that has created such an identity, and such a varied body of work, be that in his musical choices, his written output, of his historical research. I for one am glad I joined him on his journey. What would you prefer, a recording artist like Bob Dylan, or Neil Young, or The Rolling Stones who have essentially made the same record for the last 30 years?

Well said. And even outside the context of the book and soundtrack, Neon Sardinia is fucking unbelievably good. I've been playing it a lot, and I would love to have it seen a wider release. Works better than QE at times, though the stylistic differences are too vast between the two projects. Holy McGrail deserves a huge heap of praise for his work, which often gets buried in the shadow of JC.

Are you still here Holy? More music please.

Also, go buy Slomo-The Grain if you haven't done so fellow heads.

I don't have a beef but calling something perfect that to most peoples ears is clearly far from it. I'm going to disagree. Its not " whimsical " to release lousy music to your fans, its shitty. But then again for the last decade or so he's pretty much done that and for over a year now he's gone off and stuck his head in the sand so I guess its a case of "hear no evil see no evil" I literally have purchased every release over the past 25 years except the most recent available at concerts only, and while I don't feel he owes his fans anything he really has failed in the quality control department.

If you took exception to my calling it perfect, don't trip, I'm just one dude with a love for music. I have no expectations when it comes to an artist's output. They do what they do, I love what I love. Context is everything when it comes to art for me. Nurse With Mound appearing on the radio doesn't make any sense. But as characters come to life from a novel, to me that's perfect. Way better than a best of Tom Bombadil LP.

Sorry to ask, but where can I find the "ost" for Cope's book? Thanks in advance.

Sprinkled across various releases and limitedness, but mostly here via bandcamp:

Vesuvio still available in the merchandiser.

Totally agree with your sentiments there. It's great he does what he wants even if I do wish he'd make some 'proper' records again! ;)

I really didn't like 131 though.

Ta for that!

"Trip Advizer was released as my way of acknowledging that 15 years is, for some artists, a whole lifetime of work. So I felt obliged to address the whole slew of 21st Century song-based albums. Of course, I could have been extra needy and made the thing a 2CD package, but my real intention was to adopt the position of some super-editor and cut to the chase."

That's interesting because, as far as I recall, the biggest criticism of his solo career for a long, long time was that he lacked any "quality-control", that all his albums were flawed and contained at least a couple of duff tracks.

"My next book will be a trilogy for Faber & Faber. In the meantime, I have a new band called Dope, whose debut releases will soon be oozing out into the public domain. The music is a sort of dark groove-based thing, monotonous mainly and highly drug informed."

I wonder if the short time collaborating with Weatherall has had an influence?

Hmmm... I'm rather liking this development. I think a lot of us, whilst enjoying the solo shows are a little... I dunno, less-than-whelmed by the solo releases. Maybe it's just me.

The dark grooves thing is also right up my street.

Let's have some Dope.

Wow, i'm all in for some 'Dope'!!

I really don't see the relevancy of comparing the solo gigs to the solo albums, however.. And simply can't believe the albums being so slagged off in here...

"Take it as it comes", as Jimbo once put it.

Expectations inevitably lead to dis-appointments..! Especially if only expecting mere "professionalism"...

p.s: Just listened to few Cope solo's from the 00's again today. And yep, they're still among some of my VERY fave albums..!

p.p.s: Don't take this all too personally KC (even though i'm replying to your post..).

"Even failure is affirming, even failure can be cool"...

Y'know, the "Process" aspect of 'things'...
