Start with the greats: Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell. There are loads of decent compilations out there. Then move onto the Sun and Phillips International artists like Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Charlie Rich. Check out Waylon Jennings as well: his back catalogue is remarkably consistent.

Good advice taken. I'm going to revisit Gram Parsons and check out The Burrito Bros as well. Are Poco also worth giving a go re C & W orientated Rock ?

Can be worth pickling up the Essential sets of some of the artists concerned too.
I have the WAylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Dolly Parton ones and they are pretty consistent.

Not mentioned Kris Kristofferson before and his voice is a bit of an acquired taste but he is a great songwriter.

Yeah, Poco are great - but stick with the early stuff ('Good Feelin' To Know' is their best IMHO) especially the Richie Furay era. Once you get to 'Rose Of Cimmaron' it starts to get a bit too Eaglesy, and you don't want that.

Nice one. Will do. Eagles. Urgh. To quote David Crosby, eight miles wide and one inch deep.

I'm not too sure about forking out for a Dolly Parton collection to be honest. I'll have a wee dip first just in case.

She's a good songwriter and certainly did some great stuff in her early years. Worth checking out some of her 60s and 70s stuff definitely.

Don't know if it really counts, but The The's Hanky Panky might be good introduction to some songs.

Country & Western a challenge?

I often find it so.

"Americana" makes my heckles rise.
