Spin-Off Solo Albums
Aug 24, 2015, 16:27
Any great spin-off solo albums to recommend?

I am thinking in terms of albums recorded by band members while they are still in the band in question rather than post-departure efforts.

A fair few from the 70s when solo album deals were thrown around like confetti

Ace Frehley - s/t (obviously!)
Rod - Gasoline Alley / Every Picture Tells A Story / Never A Dull Moment
Ronnie Wood - Now Look
Chris Squire - Fish Out Of Water
Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte
Bryan Ferry - These Foolish Things
Stevie Nicks - Bella Donna
Peter Hammill - Fool's Mate

What else is there?

The Who had a fair share of solo lps of fairly good to excellent with the exception of Keith Moons

Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship both started up before the Airplane crashlanded

Ken Hensley - Proud Words on a Dusty Shelf
Dan McCafferty - s/t

was Jeffrey Lee Pierce still running the Gun Club when he recorded Wildweed?

SAHB without Alex - OK it's not very good but is it the only example of a band recording without the star whilst still a going concern?

Tom Furse (Tom Cowan) from The Horrors is about to bring out a solo EP that I heard a track from on the radio that sounded quite promising. Child of a Shooting Star.

Think that was his Spiders pay-off but I expect he wrote most of it while still in the band. It's a good 'un though he has the typical singing voice of a lead guitar player!
