not a fan, but for singing and playing quite different rhythms , Sting takes a bit of beating . Mcartney too , if a bit less complex

S'ok, didn't mean to sound overprotective towards the guy - I'm not sure he'd be in my top ten if I did one, but if he was in someones five I'd understand. Bass + vox list: top three. Behind Prince, who's World Champion Flash Git.

In the style of Endless Art, here's More Top 5 Greatest Bassists.

Kim Deal
Kim Gordon
Tina Weymouth
Gail Greenwood
Gail Ann Dorsey

And I'm going to throw in Suzy Quatro for the same reason I did/didn't include Phil Lynott on the other side.

I was really getting into some Dave Brown on Santana III yesterday or possibly the Independence day live set from the Legacy edition.

Also loving Tracy Pew, Arab, Chris Walsh, Bootsy, John Cale, Cris Kirkwood, Harry Howard, Cecil McBee, Mike Davis, Dave Alexander, Romi Mori, Rob Ritter, Tony Maimone, Kira Roessler, Chuck Dukowski, Ron Asheton, Phil Lesh, Jack Cassady,

& wondering how good AShley hutchings is as a bassist. I think I can guarantee I'm going to like most bands he's playing with but not sure how he fares as an actual bassist.

will think of others later

I could listen to Hook and Wobble all day, I'd get bored of Family Man basslines sooner than that.

That's interesting. I thought Hook and Wobble were great when I was 17 and their sound was fresh and new. I really liked Simon Underwood's dub/jazz thing too. The Pop Group are probably the only band from that era that I still listen to regularly. Which partly explains my five. None of the Prog, Punk or Metal guys got in as I don't much like FX, distortion or a lot of "top" on a bass guitar these days.

Greatest bass players is a fairly subjective list and 5 could easily be 25. If I had to pick the ones that objectively most influenced me personally then that list would include Wobble or Underwood for sure. Along with Charlie Haden, Chris Squire and Ken Gradney, Billy Cox or maybe Gerry McAvoy.

I'm a simple guy and I picked the ones I like listening to the most, not necessarily anything to do with proficiency (lest we end up in some kind of hideous world of muso-twiddliness). I still listen to most of the music I liked when I was 17, including all but one of my selections - Czukay came a little later! I have expanded my tastes in most every direction since then (except C&W), but I still love the melange of stuff from that post-punk period 1978-1982 the best. Even a high percentage of chart hits were terrific back then.

There is still a rush of blood every time I hear a plunging Severin bassline (something like "Into The Light" or "Like An Animal" perhaps), or Hook's propulsive playing on "Age of Consent" or the beautiful counterpoint on "Atmosphere". Similarly Wobble has kept my attention for years, from "Poptones" through the Eno/Wobble Spinner album to his solo albums and collaborations.

Erratum: I forgot Eberhard Weber! I'll (reluctantly, but in the spirit of fairness) swap him for Barry Adamson. Sorry, Baz - but I still dig you muchly.

Les Pattinson (for inventive circular bass lines which don't sound circular and keeping up with defreitas)
David Wm Sims (for weird but very right)
John Paul Jones (for so much AND being able to tie in with Bonham)
Naomi Yang (for melodies, and being able to play softly but with such purpose)
Simon Gallup (for his hair during the pornography era)

Forgot Les (how?).

Simon Gallup for his hair? Right on. Peter Hook once said that his mum had said to him that she "liked their [New Order's] new one", but it turned out to be "In Between Days" she was talking about.

As far as singing bassplayers go, which is how the thread started off with JC/McCluskey, I ought to mention Mark Burgess as well.

Aye, it's very new order that one.

Never forget the Boatbuilder! Have you heard Poltergeist yet? His & Will Sergeants project. Or should I say Prog-ject.
