How come nobody said "Assault and Battery" by Hawkwind. That bass intro with the lush Mellotron strings chokes me up every time.

Mellotron usually annoys me to hell, but I can point at least one record where the things is employed in a particularly odd, offbeat way:
Doc at the Radar Station - Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band

I dig that particular Beefheart album but never paid much attention to the mellotron. It's as if it's used in an unexpected context.

So strange that you brought up that album. I saw it the other day at a record fair and thought to myself, "Oh wow, I haven't listened to that one in a while."
I also never noticed the 'tron. Time to dust it off.
