How come nobody said "Assault and Battery" by Hawkwind. That bass intro with the lush Mellotron strings chokes me up every time.

Yes, and how about Groundhogs - Earth Shanty? Sublime mellotrauma! It's hard to recall them but they keep coming back when you least expect it.

Mellotron usually annoys me to hell, but I can point at least one record where the things is employed in a particularly odd, offbeat way: Doc at the Radar Station - Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band

I dig that particular Beefheart album but never paid much attention to the mellotron. It's as if it's used in an unexpected context. Good one!

So strange that you brought up that album. I saw it the other day at a record fair and thought to myself, "Oh wow, I haven't listened to that one in a while." I also never noticed the 'tron. Time to dust it off.

Ah, now I see. It's "Ver" and it's fab indeed.

Great call. One of my favourite Hawkwind moments.
