Amon Duul - Wolf City.

Black Sabbath - Never Say Die. Underrated. Usually by me.

Capricorns - River, Bear Your Bones. Heavy instrumental prog from way back in 2008. Sounds better and better as time limps on. Dug out because I got a bit confused with the Orchid "Capricorn" album - or was it the Capricorn "Orchid" album? No, it wasn't.

Colisseum - Valentyne Suite.

Free - Fire & Water. Was there ever a more disciplined band? Rein themselves in all the time. "Oh I Wept" - the ultimate "staring enigmatically into the distance in a windswept and interesting way" song - that is a bit trite and crap but still great.

Frijid Pink - s/t.

Grinderman - s/t. "Go Tell The Women" has become a bit of a personal anthem...

Guns and Roses - Lies. Don't ask me why. All things considered, a disgraceful record.

Hawkwind - Levitation.

Jethro Tull - War Child. Now firmly up with my fave Tull albums. Even challenging the previously impregnable Benefit.

John Cale - Close Watch.

Last People On Earth - Electric Angel. Find this because you will then be happy, if you like near faultless psychy prog.

Mighty Baby - s/t.

Motörhead - Overkill.

Motorpsycho - Heavy Metal Fruit. Only album named from a line in a Blue Oyster Cult song? EDIT - on reflection no. There are a few Blue Oyster Cult albums named after lines in ...

Sabbath Assembly - Restored To One. Well worth getting.

Shelagh McDonald - Let No Man Steal Your Thyme. Bits of this comp are incomparably lovely.

And suprisingly some other stuff. Still making my mind up about the Orchid and Opeth albums. Quo sounded good as well.

Julia Holter - Tragedy

This has received a lot of playtime this week. Alerted to it by the good folks at Boomkat who describe it a lot better than I could:

"Quite honestly one of the best albums of any description you'll hear in 2011... Julia Holter is one of the most singular female artists we've encountered from the current groundswell of American indies. Leaving Records is possibly an unusual home for her latest, but then again, what's "usual" about Sun Araw, Matthewdavid or Dem Hunger? Her high concept fifth release, 'Tragedy' is based on the Ancient Greek play 'Hippolytus', and mixes elements of synth work with droning neo-classical strings, cloud-like ambience and dreamily surreal vocals, almost like an amalgam of Robert Ashley, Maria Minerva and Laurie Anderson. There's very little else out there right now with this sort of ambition, and most importantly, such a shockingly effective sense of wonder. A stunning, stunning album and an absolute must regardless of the kind of music you usually listen to".

I'm not quite up to that level of enthusiasm (yet!) but each listen increases the rewards. Also like how it has to be listened as a whole. Pointless to dip into it.

Others:
Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties (Thanks for all the comments on the thread this week. Picked up one of those cheap five album boxes in Fopp which has this in it).
Mogwai - Earth Division
Mark Hollis - s/t
David Sylvian - Died in the Wool
Barn Owl - The Conjurer
John Coltrane and Don Cherry - The Avant Garde
Don Cherry - Hear and Now
Dantalian's Chariot - Chariot Rising
Sleep Research Facility - Deep Frieze
Steve Reich - Different Trains
Sparks - Kimono My House
Bob Blank - The Blank Generation, Blank Tapes NYC 1975 - 1987.

Have a great week all.

Orcadia – Black Sheep VC
I’ve had this a month or so but have only now summoned up the effort to listen to it after the comments here. The chances of a 2nd play are minimal I would have thought.

A Paw Of Fur, An Air Of Doom – Marc Bolan / T.Rex
Great Hits From The Box (When I Need TV I Got T.Rex Vol 1) - Marc Bolan / T.Rex
The 1st is a right mixed bag that I bought back in the 90’s – rarities, demo’s, previously unreleased tracks, etc, whilst the 2nd is audio versions of T.Rex telly performances.

Love Bites – Buzzcocks
I had a real urge to play this. Not as good as their debut but there’s some good songs all the same.

Abattoir Blues / The Lyre Of Orpheus - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
So many great NC tracks here. Easy Money is a real fave of mine.

Dead Legs & Alibi’s - Dark Captain Light Captain
It must be three years since the DCLC debut LP, but finally they’re back. If I’m honest I was hoping that they’d venture into a more Can-like direction hinted at on one of the remixes they released in 2009, but they seemed to have gone for more of the same - quality songs, hushed vocals and harmonies. Still, I’m not complaining – they’re one of the best new acts of recent years for me and I’m looking forward to getting to know these songs better.

Satan’s Circus – Death In Vegas
Something of a latterday classic IMO.

Head On - Die Haut
This passed me by at the time, but I bought it cos Alan Vega is on it – as are Kim Gordon, Lydia Lunch, Blixa Bargeld. Hilite on 1st play, however, was the one with Jeffrey Lee Pierce on vocals.

Shangri L.A. – High Wolf
There are a couple of seriously good tracks here. If Sun Araw are a dream you want to remember this might be the nightmare you want to forget. But in a good way!

Album – PIL
Is it just me or is this album somewhat forgotten these days? I seem to recall that this got the best reviews PIL had got since Metal Box – and quite rightly, too. It sounded great then and it still does today. Probably the nearest I’ll ever get to liking metal, but there’s something there that sets it apart and I don’t just mean Lydon’s voice. Imagination probably!

Pet Projects: The Brian Wilson Productions - V/A
2nd week on the trot for this one. Some great tracks such as Pamela Jean by The Survivors. Well worth checking out if you like the early Beach Boys stuff.

Also...
The Crooked Debut Of... - Michele Bombatomica
Odin – Julian Cope
This Nation's Saving Grace – The Fall
Keep On Your Mean Side – The Kills
Oracular Spectacular – MGMT
Treats - Sleigh Bells
The Eternal – Sonic Youth
Seeing For Miles (Uncut 2009) - V/A
Uncut 2009/08: Woke Up This Morning – V/A
Road to Duat – V/A

Yes it's a grower in the old fashioned way. Reminds me having to find my way into my first VdGG or Gentle Giant purchase. My only reservation is some of the singing which has even more of a Canterbury scene purity and clarity to it than his singing on Damnation. Which has never been my taste in Prog vocal styles. That is a minor gripe though as the music is stunning and has the churning menacing quality shared by a lot of the 70s Italian bands while still being totally metal.

You've confirmed my fears re Orcadia. I'm quite glad I restrained from buying it TBH, there are so many other things I need to spend my CD money on!

THat High Wolf is great isn't it? I've been really enjoying his new release (as Annapurna Illusion), Life is an Illusion. It's a bit moodier and more drifty - very good.

It comes in a rather fetching plum-cloured vinyl, for those who like that kinda thing (me).
