Picked up a great record by ARP called 'The Soft Wave'
Pure Tim Blake analogue hush with a hint of early Kraftwerk and Numan to boot, luuurving it.

Oneida -Rated O
Amazon had this triple CD for 3.99 last week, bloody hell, too good not to pick up. Disc 2 is the money shot in this collection, but it all stands up to repeat listens.

J&MC - The Power of Negative Thinking - Disc 1
Been on heavy repeat this week, great to hear Suck, Ambition and Vegetable Man without my abused vinyl pops and clicks. Not sure i could stomach 4 discs in one session, but it's a great article to dip into.

J&MA - Psychocandy.
Still the best bloody thing they ever did IMO, though why they ruined the original vinyl flow with Some Candy Talking inserted halfway through the CD is still annoying to me after all these years....Skip.

Holy Sons - Decline Of The West
This is one of my fav' records of the past year, it's not a new one, but is relatively new to me. Great lofi heartfelt acoustic-ish dabblings from the guy who drums for Grails and Om. Stunning

Numbers - In My Mind All The Time.
Basically Numbers are a one trick pony, if you've heard one track, you've pretty much heard them all, but it's that no wave, single minded, limited pallette of noise that appeals. Basically a squalking synth/organ with spastic drums, guitar yelps and random female shouts. Hell Yeah, it's back onnnnnnn.

The Earlies - The Enemy Chorus
Apsolutely hated these when my friend Charlie introduced them to me, but now, the penny has finally dropped and i can't get enough. If you've heard Phantom Band, Tunng, Beta Band it's pretty similar stuff, though the final track 'Breaking Point' is a great drawn out raga. Ain't it funny how something you loathed so much becomes so close to the heart. I'll never work it out!

Johnny Dowd - Wire Flowers
A collection of Ole Johnny's alt country/rockabilly-esq lofi demos from the first few releases. I gotta 'fess up. This guy produces some pure cheese, but i'm pretty much a sucker for the lot. I like the idea that someone can get it on (musically Speaking) later in life (he's gotta be 50's-60's?), and tread they're own skewed path regardless of public opinion. Temporary Shelter is mucho different tho, hell, it's almost Trip Hop with a heavy vibe (Oooof, hate that analogy, but it's the nearest i got).

Rough Trade Rock And Roll Vol:1
This is one of my fav' compilations ever, 2 discs of scorching tunes, most of which i gotta confess i own elsewhere, but there's ner a dud one in the selection. A few standouts for me .... STP - Hey Bastard, Dirtbombs - Underdog, a great demo version of She Cracked, Guitar Wolf - Summertime Blues, Pussy Galore - Alright. Now, if they'd only pull their finger out and get out Vol:2...though i think that's pretty unlikely sadly.

Colder - Again
This is basically like a sparser Dubbier Tarwater, but all the better cos of that if you ask me! Had a minor 'indie' hit with 'Crazy Love', a rubbery Joy Div bassline over a minimal beat with an animated video of a man running. Yeah!!!

Little Claw - Little Claw
As you've probably guessed, i'm a sucker for lofi and amateurish recordings and this is no different. Kinda like a less together Times New Viking if your looking for a touchstone, though with a bit of Wyrd Folk detuning for good measure. Sadly last years Human Taste, which was much lauded in the 'alternative' press is weak in comparison.

Anyhoo, i've blathered enough. Have a Horrible Halloween!! Arrrrrrgghhhhhh

I had my vinyl of that on this week, I'd forgotten about that. Funny how much better it sounds on vinyl, despite the deliberately trebly production! It is one of those albums that feels instinctively right on vinyl.

I Killed my vinyl of Psychocandy by playing to death back in 1989or there abouts. Seem to recall it wasn't great quality to start with.
It was released when they were starting to big up CD and all the records were getting thinner by the week. Then i bought it on Blanco y Negro chrome cassette, which got worn out pretty quickly then onto CD. Though it has to be said, it is the shittest mastered CD of all time, way overdue some kind of 'Loudness War' make over me thinks (though pleeeeze, if it happens don't do an Iggy Raw Power everything to 11 fest, he killed the record i grew up with and loved (still love) shortcomings and all).

Ditto The B-sides one Barbed Wire Kisses, maaaan, with regards to thickness, you could see daylight through that one, good job it was only £3.99 :)

I'm still amazed how 'condensed' and crunchy the wall of distortion is on Psychocandy, guess they 'gated' everything to hell. 'In A Hole' is still the standout track for me, though i think the whole record hangs together pretty well. Great ear for melody amongst all the white noise and mayhem .
If i hear a something from it when out and about i'm still humming what comes next even if it's a totally different track which follows.

Bizzarrely, I always thought they were over-rated as a band. Only really liked Psychocandy, Barbed Wire Kisses and the last one Munki, the rest i still couldn't give a damn about really. Now 'Munki', there's an under-rated pop record if ever there was one. (well in my opinion).

Not been listening to much music apart from old stuff but reading loads of good books at the moment....can recommend....

Mr Manchester and the Factory Girl - Lindsay Reade.
The Cavern - the most famous club in the world - Spencer Leigh
Life - Keith Richards
Electric Eden - Rob Young

Have a good week everyone and cut out the nasty bullshit that's been permeating this site for some time now. x

....was in the studio in south manchester when they were recording that album - remember them spending a few hours getting a bass drum sound right - seems like a waste of time now but its nice that people occasionally pick up on its greatness.

Arp/ The Soft Wave was on my list a couple weeks back and is a great record by one of the members of the also excellent Alps. Kinda Harmonia or Cluster-like it is certainly kosmische and highly recommended by me...

Wow! were you in The Earlies or an engineer at the studio?

The band seem to have disappeared without a trace after Enemy Chorus, not that i've done much digging about with ex members you understand, but may just pull me finger out and chase it up.
I like the first record as well. The penny dropped when i found one of those Rough Trade counter culture compilations (03 i think) being chucked for pennies in a local library so i picked it up. The Earlies were on the first 'quiet' disc and i couldn't stop playing it. When i picked up 'These Were The Earlies ' CD, i recognised it as the one my friend Charlie kept waving under my nose, and i kept poo pooing for so long. My, how he chuckled when i fessed up to him.

Coo, didn't know that...will deffo check out Alps. Thanks for the heads up.
If it's even half as good as ARP it'll be coppers well spent.

Think it's something to do with Autumn, i get all ambient dreamy & introspective in me music tastes, then hibernate for 3 months and listen to very little till after Xmas.

I'm sure the Hangman's Beautiful Daughter is due for a spin any day soon, already had out NWW - Spiral Insana, sure sign i'm a sloooowwwwiiin' down :)

Bardo Pond - Dilate
Got this ages ago, but it didn't really click at the time. I'm enjoying it a lot more now, and might have to investigate them further.

Yeah, i found this on promo for a few pennies in Picadilly records in Manchester some years back. I still find it hard going TBH. There's a certain something that i just can't break through. Some of the Demo stuff they release on CDr from time to time is nice though.
Have the same problem with Mogwai and Telstar Ponies. They tick all the right boxes sonically, but they just seem to lack something for me.
Though just to come over all contrary i do like Mogwai's 'New Paths To Heligon' single.

You will dig the Alps! Their new one - Le Voyage - is a good place to start as it shouldn't be hard to find a copy and its a gem.
