But which version of the album have they used? The original, or the remixed and re-recorded zebra-sleeve version?

Just had a look at CD1 through Audacity. I think it's exactly the same version that was on the 2000 re-release, as are the tracks on CD2 that were on that release too. The CD3 BBC session tracks are louder than on the Peel Sessions Plus CD.

On the original vinyl LP (with the band sleeve) the guitar riff is not muted after the first three strokes, but plays the following strum-and-slide (as heard later in both mixes) under the whole of the intro.

It's the remixed/re-recorded version. It's EXACTLY the same mastering of Kilimanjaro that is on the 2000 CD release.

That's disappointing. Always preferred the original overall myself.

Why? I ask because I don't have that version on cd.

Well it may have a lot to do with that being the one I heard first, Carlos. You always have a soft spot for your first girlfriend, don't you? ; ) But also I just thought it was better. Someone mentioned the intro to Went Crazy. That was the most notable difference IIRC, but there were a few tracks that sounded different. It's hard to explain what the difference was exactly - not a more echoey sound exactly but something like that.

Inspired by this thread, I put on my cd of the previous edition, especially as its the same mix, and the new 3-cd set is now on Spotify and..... it still sounds really tinny and 80s, and not in a good way. By chance on Spotify I came across the version of Books by solo Julian on the Leperskin compilation - where on earth is that from? Its fantastic - tons better than the Teardrops one...

I know what you mean, budy! BTW, I have a soft spot for the first, the second, the third (and so on) girlfriends ;-)
