There are few instruments with less cred than the fretless bass (the Howard Jones style keytar is probably the only one with less credibility) but I love the sound I get from my fretless Fender Jazz. I have tried others, inc a rather snazzy looking black Rick 4001 fretless, but the Fender is the one I always come back to. Has the rich lo-end boom I love and is versatile enough to transmit melodic detail that cuts through. If you want some 60s / 70s punch with a touch of that double bass "vocal" quality then there's none better that I have played. Especially if you use an amp designed for an upright. Warm n woody. Also comes equipped with "idiot lines" which after 28 years of playing fretless as my main instrument I still can't quite manage without!

Yeah, that's what I thought. Bought it by accident...drunk on ebay. I still love it, very pick-up-able and sounds nice unplugged too strangely enough. The manufacturer, Ravenswood, seem to have disappeared from the planet though. Was it a hoax?

What a lovely thread...and how i would love to grace it with worth! I have a Stratocaster painted by Alan Arthurs (he does the stage stuff for Hawkwind and is a wonderfully non pressure/sales artist in my shop.) I don't want to sell it but I really cannot play! its wasted on me (ask Tony kiernan) My fave instrument is a crappy green acoustic that I bought from horse racing betting winnings a very long time aga. I love its memories more than the sliced fingers, bruised chest I get from trying to play it. Gah, I wish I had you're're talent folkses! i will be playing the green one as I brew tonight, I just don't care, the only song I can do all the way through is 'sunspots' pip pip moc xxxxx
